There seems to be an unwritten rule that psychics are supposed to float through life surrounded by lavender incense, smiling peacefully while spirit guides whisper beautiful messages into their perfectly balanced chakras.
Please.
Psychics are human beings. Sometimes the third eye may be wide open while the patience chakra is completely closed for renovations.
Yes, psychics can be cranky.
They can wake up irritated. They can get stuck in traffic, spill coffee on themselves, argue with their partner, lose their keys, forget where they put their tarot cards and spend twenty minutes searching for the phone they’re currently holding.
Having intuition doesn’t magically remove ordinary human emotions.
In fact, being highly sensitive to other people’s moods can occasionally make someone more irritable. Imagine walking into a room and immediately noticing tension before anyone says a word. Now imagine doing that all day while people continuously ask you questions about love, money, careers, exes, soulmates and whether Pete is ever going to text back.
At some point even the universe might want to yell, “FORGET PETE.”
A psychic reading also requires attention. Whether someone approaches psychic work spiritually, intuitively or as a reflective practice, listening closely to another person’s worries for hours can be emotionally exhausting.
And clients aren’t always bringing sunshine.
People often seek readings when they’re confused, heartbroken, frightened or desperate for answers. A psychic may hear about cheating partners, family fights, breakups, grief, financial problems and complicated relationships throughout the day.
That’s a lot of emotional baggage arriving at the metaphysical airport.
Good psychics usually develop ways of separating themselves from their work. They might meditate, take breaks, exercise, journal, spend time outside, cleanse their reading space or simply turn off their phone and watch ridiculous television for an evening.
Sometimes, however, somebody forgets to recharge.
That’s when you may encounter the Cranky Psychic.
Suddenly the mystical voice sounds less like, “Spirit is guiding you toward transformation,” and more like, “Honey, he’s blocked you six times. I don’t need tarot cards for this.”
And perhaps that’s not entirely terrible.
Occasionally a little psychic crankiness produces refreshing honesty. Some people don’t need another twenty-minute explanation about cosmic timing. They need someone to gently point out that repeatedly checking an ex’s social media at 2 a.m. isn’t technically a spiritual practice.
But there is an important difference between being human and being disrespectful.
A psychic having an off day is one thing. A reader insulting clients, frightening them, belittling them or deliberately making them anxious is something else entirely. “I’m tired today” isn’t a mystical license to treat people badly.
The same applies to clients.
Your psychic isn’t an emotional vending machine where you insert money and receive exactly the prediction you wanted. If the reading doesn’t say your ex is returning Tuesday at precisely 4:17 p.m. carrying roses and an apology letter, yelling at the reader isn’t going to convince the universe to rewrite the schedule.
Respect should travel in both directions.
And sometimes the most professional thing a cranky psychic can do is recognize that they’re cranky.
Close the cards.
Put away the crystal ball.
Cancel the reading.
Eat something.
Take a nap.
Tell the spirit world that office hours will resume tomorrow.
Because psychic ability whatever you believe its source to be doesn’t require pretending to be spiritually perfect every minute of every day.
You can meditate and still swear when you stub your toe.
You can cleanse your aura and still be annoyed by someone chewing loudly.
You can talk about universal love and still secretly hope the person who stole your parking spot gets stuck behind every red light.
Maybe that’s what makes psychic work interesting in the first place.
Behind the tarot cards, crystals, candles, intuition and mysterious messages is still a person experiencing ordinary human life.
So if your favorite psychic seems slightly cranky today, don’t immediately assume Mercury has entered retrograde, Saturn is attacking their aura or a mischievous spirit followed them home.
Maybe they just need coffee.
Even the third eye occasionally needs a day off.
